Covering rallies and demonstrations

I wasn’t able to cover a big rally or demonstration in the past.  It is usually the prerogative of desk people whom to assign to cover rallies, but normally reporters or correspondents assigned in the police beat are sent to cover demonstrations and rallies. Rallies don’t always end up with commotion so desk people won’t buy a “no story” alibi from reporters who would tell them there is no earth-shaking story from the event. Besides knowing the main purpose of the rally, reporters can make a feature article from the trivial to unusual things that they observe at the rally site. You can describe even the stanchions and ropes that prevent rallyists from entering the restricted zone. Or do an interview with the youngest member of the rallying group. Things like that. You could end up with an interesting story if you would dig deeper into the details.
